The First Year Milestone Approaching

3

In June, one year ago, the first NoTA-conference was held in Helsinki – more than fifty companies around the World gathered together to share views and experiences on NoTA architecture. It was also the event in which Nokia released NoTA to be an open architecture – free to use for everybody either through open source licensing or through a royalty free open technology license. It was a bold decision and significant vote for the open innovation and for the open future of mobile technologies.

The development of the NoTA architecture was a sizeable effort and not only from Nokia – there were quite a few big companies participating in the development process. Several technology trials and demos were built together with many technology houses to further develop and verify the proposed technology. The usage of existing product technologies in the proof of concept process convinced parties that NoTA and DIP can be smoothly adopted together with legacy platforms and solutions and that these are not only to enable something new and different.

NoTA is spanning an open modular architecture by providing a platform and technology independent system interconnect solution together with service oriented approach to share functional resources. Independence of technologies, operating systems and application frameworks make NoTA to be applicable in all environments – ARM or Intel, Tron or Linux, Symbian or Android, and further more, providing opportunity for interoperability across the borders. Of course, to be a comprehensive open solution, there are also other elements required: open HW interfaces like MIPI, open APIs like Khronos, open application frameworks like Android. Using such an Open Stack, with NoTA included, we are going towards open innovation and platforms instead of being trapped with traditional vertically integrated proprietary product platforms.

However, being successfully open, means something beyond technology. Without an extensive and active ecosystem and living community many of the promises would fade away. NoTA ecosystem should include technology providers, product houses, integrators, service providers, research entities, innovators, and individual developers together with other related communities. So, where are we after one year?

During the past 12 months the awareness of NoTA has spread well. Notaworld.org has been a good tool for that – visitors from 85 different countries, with more than 17 000 visits, from more than 600 sites have accessed notaworld.org WEB-pages. NoTA reference implementation has been downloaded several hundreds of times per release. Number of commercial licensees is somewhere around 20 with many big global technology houses in the list. Notaworld.org with its own booth has been in highly visible in events like Tronshow 2009 in Tokyo and Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Several service companies are setting-up capabilities to provide NoTA related services like testing, programming, and system integration. Couple of new companies have already been founded based on NoTA expertise. Also universities and research institutes are starting to pick-up NoTA related research topics in their research portfolios. And last but not least, several technology companies are developing NoTA compatible offerings as was already seen in the last year’s NoTA conference and many new things are on the way.

What is missing? Interaction and sharing! Notaworld.org WEB-site has been pretty one directional and most of the things are happening behind the curtains. Let’s change this! You can start asking, challenging and sharing! Tell others about your concerns, projects, products or provided services. Start discussion about new directions to go or new innovations. And, of course, challenge also the team behind the notaworld.org to enable live interaction and sharing.

As a practical step, you can send a description of your research project in which you are planning to use NoTA; if you have NoTA compatible products or product plans use notaworld.org to promote them and get feedback; if you are ready to provide NoTA related services please let others know about it; would you be ready to do collaboration to build something new, feel free to use notaworld.org to do the pairing; do you need NoTA expertise or service, you can put your request to the white board of the site. It is up to you how much you can benefit from the community.

The first year is almost done – and it is time to start second year with an announcement of the second annual NoTA Conference which will take place on 30th of September and the 1st of October 2009 in San Jose, California, USA. More information is available in http://www.vtt.fi/nota2009. Looking forward seeing you there.

Therefore not many athletes have been able to start in more than 50 combined events competitions during their career.Nokia X6

  • A couple weeks back, Hyundai put a stop-sale on its freshly minted 2011 Sonata sedan because a front door latch could malfunction after a rather labored series of steps. The stop-sale was lifted almost immediately, though, as the Korean automaker was able to quickly ship replacement parts to U.S. dealers, at which point the vehicles in stock were repaired. At that time, though, Hyundai promised to work with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to put out a recall notice for the 1,300 vehicles that had already been sold; a promise that came to fruition this morning as NHTSA put out an official bulletin. The NHTSA recall notice claims that the front inside door lock switches can remain in the unlatched position under certain conditions, making it possible for the front driver or passenger doors to open while the vehicle is in motion. Hyundai tells us that the latch may malfunction when a front inside door lock switch is held in the locked position while the inside door handle is pulled to open the door.

  • This could be a good article, but like most people writing about derby recently you have ruined it and made it look like it was written by a bitter five year old with some little phrases you have dropped in attacking derby. The article is good, however, are Hull really a “footballing giant”????? Also, last season derby were awful and had awful players, no argument there. However this season they have a completely new team and have some good individual talent, they just have not started well, so for you to describe mares as the one of the few players who is not horribly atrocious is just plain stupid and shows your lack of knowledge about this current derby team. Also, you mention Swansea’s good result in the cup as a reason they will be derby, but fail to mention that derby went away to Preston in the cup and beat them keeping a clean sheet at the same time. I am not saying derby are good, they are awful, but there is no need for you to exaggerate in an article about them! they already are THAT bad!
